Truth #4: Depression affects more people than you think
The CDC reports that in a given year 1 in 10 adults experience depression, and PBS estimates that within ten years depression will be the 2nd most common illness in the United States.
Do you know that many people who experience depression? Probably not. People who have depression don’t always obviously show their symptoms. This may be because of a fear of letting others see their weakness or may be because their symptoms aren’t that bad or always present.
Just because someone experiences depression, doesn’t mean that they can never be happy. It just means that sometimes that experience periods of extreme sadness.
So be careful of what you say and where you say it. You may say something rude about mental illness, thinking that no one around will be offended, but you can’t always tell who’s around.
Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself.
